Building a new home or completing a kitchen renovation can be a fun, exciting and sometimes stressful time. Many people struggle to make decisions about finishings and features that they will live with for years to come. Planning a kitchen renovation around the new year can be especially fun since you can get an idea of all the kitchen design trends that are ahead for the coming years.
Legend Interiors specializes in working with clients to design functional kitchen and bath spaces that fit their lifestyles and budget. Legend Interiors owner, Michael Baudin, sat down with interior designer and long time collaborator, Nicole Ruppel Jones to talk about design trends for 2017. Here are our tips for what to include in your next remodel or new construction.
Kitchen Design Trends for 2017:
- Functional Spaces: Expect to see lots of transitional style kitchen cabinets and an emphasis on spaces that allow you to still use your necessary items.
Nicole: Gone are the days of spaces that just look nice. Home owners want spaces that still look nice and work with their individual lifestyles.
Michael: One of our favorite new kitchen design trends is pocket doors that hide away small appliances like microwaves. That way, appliances are easily accessible to the family during everyday life but can be easily hidden away for entertaining.
- The New Neutrals:
Color schemes featuring grey as the new neutral are still hot and are here to stay.
Nicole: Mix neutrals with pops of bold shades like navy blues and kelly greens.
Michael: Honed absolute black granite, and consistent color quartz both work well with greys for a sleek contemporary looks. This applies to both kitchen design and bathrooms alike, like the sleek neutral grey bathroom design pictured below.
- Bold Lighting and LED Lighting: Energy efficient, long lasting and beautiful, LED lighting is a great choice.
Nicole: LEDs are becoming the norm for kitchen and bath design and they can be used in lots of creative ways. Large pendant lighting integrated with task lighting shows the duality between aesthetic and function.
Michael: LEDs come in all sorts of new shapes and sizes, and this allows us to hide them in places we couldn’t before, really adding to the customization of your space.
- Mixed Metals: We love the look of mixing metals like the custom chrome and brass hood pictured below.
Nicole: Mixing of metals is no longer a faux pas and the use of brass has replaced the previously more popular chrome.
Michael: This can even apply to knobs and faucet fixtures for a funky fun look. A kitchen renovation we did recently had a satin nickel faucet with brass knobs, and looked great!
- Spaces for Gathering: Trends in kitchen design are navigating away from formal dining arrangements and gathering in the kitchen instead, with kitchen islands becoming a MUST.
Nicole: Great kitchen design focuses on providing the homeowner with an experience and truly memorable cooking space. Kitchen islands are becoming more creative by the minute with waterfall edging and custom designed hoods intended to be a focal point and piece of art.
Michael: With both parents working and less time for meal prep and dinners around a formal table, open plan kitchens make quick family meals fun and enjoyable. Gathering around a beautifully finished island or bar is just easier and works better with modern lifestyles. This is one of our kitchen design trends that is here to stay.
- Materials with a WOW factor: Homeowners are becoming more aesthetically attuned and utilizing materials that have been nearly forgotten.
Nicole: Quartz is hot and so are large format tiles and bold geometric back splashes. A few trends to look out for in 2017 are stone backsplash running the full height of the wall, thicker profile edging, and vertical veining and patterns.
Michael: It’s amazing how far quartz has come with their “marble looks”. Now, homeowners can enjoy the wow factor look of marble without worrying about staining or scratching. This is huge for families who live in the kitchen and use their countertops every day.
